I was captivated from the beginning and couldn't put it down。 Sometimes I read a book and find that I get distracted quickly but definitely not with this 1! In the end, this is a story about right against wrong and about choices。  Sometimes making the right choice can be the most hurtful。 Thank you to NetGalley, Profiles books, Viper and Serpent's Tail for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion。 。。。more

This book was nearly impossible to put down and I read the entire thing in less than 12 hours while parenting during a lockdown。 :)

A very slow storyline, Owen goes missing leaving a note to take care of Bailey his daughter。Then things start to unfold with Owen not being who he said he was。I enjoyed the storyline with Hannah bonding with her stepdaughter and her love of woodwork, the rest I found very slow and waited for the twist that didn`t come。So would definitely call it a thriller。Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review。 A very slow storyline, Owen goes missing leaving a note to take care of Bailey his daughter。Then things start to unfold with Owen not being who he said he was。I enjoyed the storyline with Hannah bonding with her stepdaughter and her love of woodwork, the rest I found very slow and waited for the twist that didn`t come。So would definitely call it a thriller。Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

Owen’s boss at his tech company is arrested and Hannah is totally perplexed when her numerous calls to Owen’s phone go unanswered。 She and Bailey set out to discover what happened to Owen and in their trip down the rabbit hole of secrets and lies, they slowly discover a relationship with each other。 With lots of twists and turns, this was a book that was hard to put down and completely absorbing。 The characters are well-developed and realistic, with Bailey’s character being one of a spoiled “daddy’s girl” who has to wake up to a new reality。 Hannah is inventive in her quest to find out what happened to Owen and why he would leave his beloved daughter behind。 Bailey seems to hold a lot of secrets that she doesn’t know she holds and it is up to Hannah to tease them out。 This entire book was like being drawn further and further into a spider’s web and not knowing where I would end up。 The plot was intricately and delicately woven around the non-relationship between Hannah and Bailey and the lies that Owen told each of them。 I really enjoyed how the author depicted the growing dependency and relationship between the two and how Bailey’s view of her stepmother increasingly became one of trust instead of total resentment。 The characters made this story, and the plot wasn’t far behind。 Loved it! Fans of domestic suspense will not want to miss this one that will have you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next secret to be revealed。DisclaimerDisclosure of Material Connection: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley。 I was not required to write a positive review。 The opinions expressed are my own。 I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255, “Guides Concerning the Use of Testimonials and Endorsements in Advertising。” 。。。more

For starters, each chapter has a heading! When did we stop naming chapters?! Did we ever or have they always just been numerical? 🤔 I don’t know but I LOVED that little detail。 I looked forward to it with every new chapter。 Such a small thing but it really added to my reading enjoyment。 It kind of reminds me of the Friends episodes “The One Where。。。”。 This was a slowww burn and not really what I would consider a conventional thriller。 The writing was great and I really enjoyed the story, which was more of a character driven one。 The beginning hooked me from the first page。。but then it started to stall about halfway through。 The story just wasn’t really going anywhere。 And once you get to the why of it I didn’t really find it plausible。 To the very last page I was waiting for a bombshell to blow my mind and warrant the amazing reviews。 Alas, there wasn’t one。 It felt a little anticlimactic if I am being honest。 But overall, a good and enjoyable read。 Thank you to Netgalley, Simon & Schuster, and the author for this earc in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Bailey, who had lost her mother in an accident when she was a young child, is left a mass of confusion and pain, feelings Hannah can understand and relate to。 Matters become darker when the boss of the tech software company Owen worked for is arrested by the FBI for fraud, with the FBI and a US Air Marshall wanting to know more about Owen。Hannah, a skilled craftswoman working in wood, proves to be a resilient, compassionate, courageous, smart, and ferociously determined mother who makes the decision to look into the man she had married as she joins forces with a Bailey that comes to rely on her and begins to trust her。 It does not take long before it starts to become apparent that Owen is far from what he appeared to be in this tense narrative that goes back and forth in time, with a focus on Hannah's marriage。 There are numerous twists and turns, that involve going from Sausalito, their Californian home, to Austin, Texas, with the truth coming as a shockingly unexpected surprise。 This is a riveting, thoughtful, engaging and entertaining read, succinct with short chapters, well plotted and with complex and realistic characters that feel all too authentic。 It touches on the nature of family, secrets, deception, danger, and the ties that bind。 I understand this is going to be turned into a TV series featuring Julia Roberts! Highly recommended。 Many thanks to Serpent's Tail/Profile Books for an ARC。 。。。more

You kiss your husband goodbye for work and a couple hours later a girl on a bike has a note for her。 The note is in Owen's (her husband) handwriting and says "protect her"。 Then all hell breaks loose。 Bailey is Hannah's step-daughter and she assumes her husband wants her to protect her but she doesn't really understand from who。 When Bailey comes home from school with a duffel bag full of money and I mean FULL of money like $60,000 from her dad, Hannah realizes that something big is happening。 T You kiss your husband goodbye for work and a couple hours later a girl on a bike has a note for her。 The note is in Owen's (her husband) handwriting and says "protect her"。 Then all hell breaks loose。 Bailey is Hannah's step-daughter and she assumes her husband wants her to protect her but she doesn't really understand from who。 When Bailey comes home from school with a duffel bag full of money and I mean FULL of money like $60,000 from her dad, Hannah realizes that something big is happening。 This suspense novel is very well written and the characters are well developed。 You root for them to find the answers to the questions they may not want answered。 This book also piqued my interest in "woodturning" furniture。 I highly recommend putting this on your TBR shelf for May 4th。Thanks to #Simon&Schuster, #netgalley and @lauradaveauthor for an ARC of this great read。 。。。more

I read this book in one sitting。 That's it。 That's the review :)Owen disappears, leaving Hannah (his wife) a note that says "Protect her"。 Hannah knows he's referring to his daughter, Bailey。 That's the premise, and from there, there's a quick succession of events that keep you want to know what will happen afterwards, as Hannah and her stepdaughter try to uncover why Owen left, and in the process uncovering the truth about his past。 It's also about the development of the fragile relationship be I read this book in one sitting。 That's it。 That's the review :)Owen disappears, leaving Hannah (his wife) a note that says "Protect her"。 Hannah knows he's referring to his daughter, Bailey。 That's the premise, and from there, there's a quick succession of events that keep you want to know what will happen afterwards, as Hannah and her stepdaughter try to uncover why Owen left, and in the process uncovering the truth about his past。 It's also about the development of the fragile relationship between Hannah and Bailey。I could not put this book down。 It hooked me from the beginning (which is not very common these days)。 The characters felt realistic。 I don't want to add anything to avoid spoilers, but get yourself a copy and untangle the mystery! This review is based on an ARC of the book。 Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
